Using original songs blending folk, bluegrass, jazz, and blues -- as well as improvised songs & musical stories -- Paul Helou is equally adept at performing for both children and adults. His shows for children are high-energy, interactive events with quality original songs. His bluegrass/folk shows for adults reflect the same energy with a high level of musicianship and a confident showmanship that engages and uplifts the audience.
Whatever the scenario, his performances combine a spontaneous sense of humor, personal warmth, and engaging simplicity that draws from a rich well of diverse talents.
Whether he is doing interactive shows with children, leading a bluegrass ensemble, or playing solo, Paul’s inviting style of performance ranges from playing songs -- ala traditional performer/audience concert -- to leading audiences/participants in improvised songs & musicalized stories.
His musical program for children, Songs in Motion, blends songs, movement, storytelling & improvised musical drama. For those looking for unusual & personalized children’s programming, Songs in Motion is a quality, interactive & intelligent (as well as fun!) alternative.
Wild About Books! is Paul’s new interactive musical program for libraries, schools and any other venue wishing to encourage reading. Through songs and musical improv skits, Paul encourages imagination and curiosity about other cultures. Using movement, sound & laughter, he also links how reading is tied into improvisation and storytelling. When you listen to your heart and your head, knowledge is power!
For adults, Paul works with actors/improvisors -- or anyone seeking more freedom of expression -- to create an experience similar to improvising a musical. In this case, the music becomes a catalyst for free play -- something which adults, including professional performers, can use to infuse their lives or art with a new sense of vitality and spontaneity.
